Summer on Kitzsteinhorn

5 comments so far »

Hello from Kaprun! My name is Christian Hörl and I work in the marketing department of Gletscherbahnen Kaprun cable cars. I am looking forward to providing you with the latest news and insider tips on Kitzsteinhorn.

Guided walking tours, fascinating routes, fun and entertainment at the ICE ARENA or climbing a summit of more than 3,000 metres for the very first time: summer on Kitzsteinhorn is a one-of-a-kind Alpine experience that I’ll be glad to share with you. On Wednesday I’ll be setting out for a guided summit tour up 3,203-metre-high Kitzsteinhorn. Together with a certified mountain guide and a group of passionate hikers who are eager to conquer the summit, too, I’ll be heading for lofty heights. In my next post, I will let you in on my experiences. By the way: the guided summit tour takes place every Wednesday. For more information please visit http://en.kitzsteinhorn.at/on the Internet.

Please advise if Ice Arena is presently open for kids aged 10 to 14th What type of footwear and clothing needs to be worn for Ice Arena and perhaps cross country skiing ?
Can boots be hired for Ice Arena area (or are they necessary? ) Are coats and hats necessary? Thank you very much

  2. Hi Janet,
the ICE ARENA at the very upper part, the glacier plateau at 2.900 metres, is open at present and of course a refreshing playground for kids and adults. Therefore we recommend to wear hiking shoes or winter boots and to bring jackets with you (no guarantee of getting wet in the boots when sliding in the summer snow). Boots may be hired in the middle section on your way up to the Kitzsteinhorn, at the Alpincenter. There is an Intersport shop offering boots for rental, even for children of that age. We hope to keep the ICE ARENA open up to the middle of August (depending on the weather of the coming weeks). The tracks for cross country skiing will be open again in autumn. Do not forget your sunglasses and suncreme – the sun is very intensive above 3.000 metres. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to contact me.
    Kind regards,
    Christian

Hi Christian – Many thanks for your quick reply and commments which were most helpful. We will be in the area from 2nd to 10th Aug so is it better that we go to the ice arena early on in our trip in case its closed towards the end of our visit? Thanks for update on cross country skiing – can we instead take the short tour of the glazier (45 min one with train back?) Does the lift stop at the Alpencentre so we can hire boots or are there different lift systems to each level? When we are buying the ticket at the bottom do we have to ask for tickets for the different levels? Any idea of boot hire cost for the day? 2 Adults and 3 kids (great to be able to hire as we wont have winter footwear with us. Many thanks!

  4. I would recommend that you visit the ICE ARENA as soon as possible during your holidays. It really depends on the weather for the coming days how long we are able to keep the ICE ARENA open. Instead of cross country skiing we also have a lot of other opportunities. Whether free guided hiking tours, fascinating routes, the panorama terrace “Glocknerkanzel”, the first climb up a 3.000 metre peak etc. Please visit our homepage for detailed information. Concerning the Kitzsteinhorn cableways: Three modern cableways take you up to the summit station at 3.029 m above sea level. You have to pass three sections where you have to change the lifts in an easy and really comfortable way. At the Alpincenter there is the top station of “Gletscherjet 2″ and the valley station of “Gipfelbahn” – so you have time enough for visiting the sport shop “Intersport Kitzsteinhorn Alpincenter”. According to the information from the sport shop, the price for 2 adults and 3 children hiring boots is € 22,50 for one day. When you buy the ticket for the cable ways please ask for the tickets up to the summit station (ticket prices). Did you hear about the Zell am See-Kaprun Card? With this card you get a lot of attractions for free – glacier adventure on the Kitzsteinhorn too. So see you in August on the Kitzsteinhorn!
    Greetings from Kaprun
