On Saturday morning our company staff planned a trip to the state capital formerly called “JUVAVUM”. Carina and Andrea surprised us with a wonderful breakfast package. Freshly baked bread with bacon and an excellent chocolate muffins handmade by the two girls sweetened the ride.

Our first stop was at the brewery Gusswerk. The speciality of them are the biological brewed beers. Our guide Roland  gave us an exciting guided tour in the art of brewing and tasting. The lunch which was a different kind of tarte was delicious.

The thing you should see in Salzburg is the Hangar 7. Architecture, art and cuisine paired is an exciting concept for visitors.
In the evening we visited the fortress Hohensalzburg. We enjoyed a guided tour into the hidden places deep into the walls and had a fantastic view over the rooftops of Salzburg.
Then we visited the Casino: “Rouge or Noir” was here the question. We there set on our lucky number.

Although Salzburg was not unknown for the most of us we were able to gain new experiences and spend a pleasant time together.

Who is the best in golf and skiing? For the 10th time athletes participated in the Ski & Golf World Championship in Zell am See-Kaprun.

280 athletes from 17 nations showed a great performance. Fastest skiiers were ski worldcup winner Philipp Schörghofer, Kristaps Zvejnieks (LAT) got 2nd and Patrik Järbyn 3rd.

Overall winner was Norbert Kirchner with a lead of five strokes. Oswald Hochfilzer  got 2nd with 4 below par. Last year’s winner Bernard Neumayer got 3rd. Patrik Järbyn got 6th. Andrea Lanz won the women’s competition and Eva Kozeluhova (CZ) got 2nd.

Team Kitzbühel won for the 6th time the team competition with Walter Fischer, Stefan Egger, Anton Ortner, Oswald Hochfilzer und Patrick Bätz (replacement for Bode Miller) and hasn’t been beaten so far.

At 10.00 the pistol shot started the athletes on their way from the Salzburger Platz in the center of Kaprun. Around 50 participants from rookies to the experts were giving this high alpine run with 17 km and 2.500m altitude difference a shot. Finnish was the “Top of Salzburg” at the peak of the Kitzsteinhorn.

Well equipped incl. avalanche transceiver, pair of crampons, 1 harness and 1 Via Ferrata kit, 1 pair of poles, helmet, etc. the safety of the participants had the highest priority. Before starting the real uphill race the athletes had to run 4 km – the ski and ski shoes on the backpack – after 400 high meters they changed to the ski. Now it was real hard work – steep trails, warm temperatures and heavy snow made it not that easy. At the Landwied station the snow was great and the trail up to the Krefelderhütte and the Alpincenter fine. The next stop was the ICECAMP – it was funny to walk through the igloo. After a Red Bull shot and a power bar drink the participants had to ski down a short trail without the special skin on the ski.

The last part of the race was the biggest challenge for the athletes – very steep route and high alpine conditions made demands on a high level of concentration. At the very end the last 100 high meter the participants had to put the ski and shoes on the backpack again. By walk the participant passed the finish line. The fastest men and women had the chance to walk up to the peak of the Kitzsteinhorn.

I didn´t – I had the chance to get a cool beer at the “Top of Salzburg” – believe me – it was a good decision

On Wednesday, March 20th of 2013, the 26th Guest and tourism race took place at the Maiskogel in Kaprun. The great thing on this event is that locals and guests can participate.
The Zell am See – Kaprun Information Team was present with a “girl team”! The weather was gorgeous and at 12.30am we inspected the giant slalom and picked up our bib numbers. After warming up we went to the start and the pressure and pleasant anticipation increased. But for very nervous people the ‘doctor’ offerd ‘medicine’ – an austrian ‘Schnaps’

“3,2,1 and start” After these words we gave our best on the racing slope. At the finish area everybody was happy about the run and of course that nobody got hurt. Before we went to the award ceremony to ‘Kitsch & Bitter – the best bar in town’ we used the perfect weather and slopes for skiing and a drink at the sun terrace of the ski bar “Eisbär”.
In the evening we enjoyed the great atmosphere with DJ Dani at the ‘Kitsch & Bitter’. After this great day we fell happy and exhausted into our beds.

Steep slopes with deep snow, high drops and awesome riders: the X Over Ride took place for the 10th time at the Kitzsteinhorn. The goal isn’t to be as fast as possible but to show the best style and skills. The event is even a Freeride World Tour Qualifier – the winners get points for the freeride world cup.

Skiing & relaxing in the warming sun – that’s what skiing in spring is about. When the days are getting longer and the first flowers blossom in the valley it’s great to enjoy the sun up in the mountains. We can guarantee lots of snow in Zell am See-Kaprun even in spring because of the glacier Kitzsteinhorn. But you’ll love the Maiskogel and Schmitten too where there’s plenty of snow left.

Take a break at the ICECAMP at the Kitzsteinhorn – an igloo made of ice and snow with deck-stairs and a wonderful view on the outside – that’s unique in Austria!

Every year the evening before the Palm Sunday my niece and I prepare together the palm frond. We put bows, pretzels and other sweets on it and the next day we go to church and bless it. The person who gets up late in the morning during the ‘Holy Week’ gets some funny names. I used to get up early when I was a child, because then I didn’t get a funny name like ‘Palmesel’, which literary means “palm donkey”.

The ‘Maundy Thursday‘has a high importance for me, because on this day my mother and I color the Easter eggs. We do not use normal colors; we just do it with herbs and onion skins. Another custom is ‘blowing’ an egg. We use a needle, which we put into the egg and then we blow the inside egg out of it. We color the eggs and use them as a decoration in our house. The same day my mother prepares a basket, where she puts bacon, cheese, bread, eggs and the traditional paschal lamb in. It is used for the church service on Easter Sunday. When I was a child, they often called me ‘Hantlersgare’, because I got up late in the morning.  :-)

The next day is called ‘Good Friday’ and on this day it is an old custom to eat meatless. The same goes for the Ash Wednesday. The person who gets up late on this day is called ‘Karfreitagsratschn’ in Austria.

The fasting period ends with the Easter Sunday and at 05.00am my parents and I visit the traditional Easter Bonfire in front of the church. At 02.00pm the Schmitten in Zell am See organizes the traditional Easter egg hunting. Last year my niece and I visited this event. The weather was not very nice, but we had a lot of fun. Every egg contains a great price, if you find the big ‘Schmitten Jackpot-egg’; you win € 500 in cash. Maybe you are the lucky winner of the big ‘Schmitten Jackpot-egg’ in cash this year.

Can you imagine how people skied decades ago? Without carving ski made of modern materials and goretex ski jackets to keep you warm but just in wool clothing with wooden skis?

On the 9th of February our 10th “Nostalski” event took place: 200 participants (Germany, Slowenia, Italy, England, Barvaria, Tyrol and the Pinzgau) competed with old ski at the slopes of the Schmitten which is celebrating its 85th anniversary.

It was awesome to watch – and you can be extremely fast even with old skis.

On January the 23rd VIPs and youngsters once again raced in the town center of Zell am See. 3000 people cheered for the pros like Marc Girardelli, Annemarie Moser-Pröll, Hanns Enn and many more. Lots of snow was brought to the town center to ensure a steep and fast race slope. The Schmittenhöhebahn hat much to party to – they are 85 years old and were one of the first cablecars in Salzburg. In the end the VIPs Monika EXENBERGER-MAIERHOFER and Hans ENN won!
